Ankle & Foot Care Centers Donates $19,700 to Diabetes Partnership of the Mahoning Valley

BOARDMAN, Ohio (Nov. 15, 2018) - Diabetes affects more than one million individuals in Ohio alone. This prevalent disease often leads to serious complications in the feet, which podiatric physicians at Ankle & Foot Care Centers treat regularly.

As an effort to combat diabetes and support local diabetics and their caregivers, Ankle & Foot Care Centers hosts an annual golf benefit fundraiser and the proceeds go toward the Diabetes Partnership of the Mahoning Valley. This year's event raised $19,707 for the organization.

Since 1999, Ankle & Foot Care Centers has raised nearly $185,000 from the golf outing and has donated funds to the American Diabetes Association up until four years ago, and then it began donating the funds to the DPMV, totaling nearly $80,000.

"The purpose for the annual golf benefit has always been to raise funds for diabetic support and research," said Dr. Michelle Anania, the Ankle & Foot physician who leads the golf benefit and works closely with the partnership. "But, about four years ago, we began supporting the DPMV because we know 100 percent of the proceeds stay here in the Valley and go toward supporting individuals with diabetes."

The partnership was formed five years ago to provide education, information, resources and support to minimize the effects of the disease on type I and II diabetics of all ages.

Ed Hassay, president of the DPMV, noted that the partnership's efforts include:

  • Connecting diabetics and their families with healthcare providers, educators and other diabetes support personnel and facilities.

  • Working with businesses that manufacture and distribute diabetic equipment and supplies to explore assistance to those in need.

  • Educating those involved with diabetics including teachers, employers, restaurant owners and others to the plight and needs of the diabetic as they interact with them.

  • Awarding scholarships to college-bound Type 1 diabetics, in honor of Jean Rider, a former board member and a Type 1 diabetic who, over the years, volunteered to test devices to control blood sugars and assisted with many diabetics in the Mahoning Valley.

  •

The partnership donates much of its funds to the Midlothian Free Health Clinic, located at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Avenue in Youngstown. The clinic provides free primary, preventative and educational health care to people ages 18-64 who meet income qualifications and do not have health insurance.

The DPMV gave three $1,000 and two $500 scholarships this year and has distributed $14,000 in scholarships since 2016.

"Ankle & Foot Care Centers has been generously supporting us for the last several years, and has been our main donor, allowing us to further achieve our mission statement goals of helping diabetics in our community," Hassay said. "The proceeds from the golf benefit help us to award scholarships to deserving Type 1 diabetic high school seniors and also support the Midlothian Free Health Clinic on Wick, which saves lives of people every day with diabetic supplies. We're grateful for the money we receive from this practice, as it does great things for local diabetics in need."

Funds raised by the partnership are managed by the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley. More information about the group is available at diabetespartnershipmv.com.
