Proper Diagnosis Relieves Local Woman's Pain

Several months of cortisone shots for extreme pain in her feet did not do Ellen Hartman any good.

But once the bunion and hammertoes that caused the pain were properly diagnosed, a brief outpatient surgery cleared those up and removed the pain.

"I can walk a lot better now," said Ellen, 56, of East Palestine. "It's a lot easier to go up and down steps."

Ellen began feeling pain in her feet during the summer of 2008, particularly when she was at work on the cleaning staff at the Pittsburgh International Airport.

"The pain got so bad I could hardly walk," Ellen recalled. "I went to other doctors (in Beaver Falls), and they couldn't recognize the problem. One gave me cortisone shots."

She wound up being referred to Dr. Lawrence DiDomenico of Ankle & Foot Care Centers, who identified the problem as a bunion and hammertoes.

She had surgery in July 2009 and underwent therapy for about 10 weeks, including exercise on a treadmill.

"It was an outpatient procedure that took about two hours," she said of the procedure. "There was no difficulty or pain at all.

"None of the other doctors took care of me like Dr. DiDomenico did."

Running Barefoot: Worth the Risks?

Running Barefoot: Worth the Risks?Barefoot running has become an increasing trend and a possible alternative or training adjunct to running with shoes.

While anecdotal evidence and testimonials proliferate on the Internet and in the media about the possible health benefits of barefoot running, research has not yet adequately shed light on the immediate and long-term effects of this practice.

Barefoot running has been touted as improving strength and balance, while promoting a more natural running style.

However, the risks of barefoot running include a lack of protection -- which may lead to injuries such as puncture wounds -- and increased stress on the lower extremities.

Currently, scientific research has been inconclusive regarding the benefits and/or risks of barefoot running.

Your best choice is to consult a podiatrist to make an informed decision on all aspects of your running and training programs.
